There are so many things to think about when expecting your first baby, like “what baby essentials do I need?” Here is The buy baby clothes guide and some ideas Bubs For Babes have put together.
Let it be said, first you will receive so many cute gifts and the most adorable little outfits for your baby shower, but all those little outfits aren’t always essential or even practical as lovely as they may look. You will soon work out what you need with following The buy baby clothes guide and what works best for you and your baby. Depending on when you have your baby shower, it’s great to be able to have time to sort out all the gifts and then be able to make a baby essential list (I love lists…) using the buy baby clothes guide.
From there, you can work out what you don’t like, what to return and what you still need. What Aunt Dorothy thinks is so sweet, might not be what you think is sweet and you couldn’t imagine putting your Bubs into the ‘romper’ she bought (and that’s what she calls it – bless her) – she’ll never remember and you don’t have to tell her – ssshhhhh!
We at Bubs For Babes have put together the buy baby clothes guide of what we found to be baby clothes essentials for the early days…
Long or short sleeved depending on the season. Plain white or coloured cotton, these, we found to be one of the most useful items in the buy baby clothes guide. Whether the vest is used underneath the baby grow to keep your Bubs warm or just to chill in. These are great. The onesie vests with poppers at the base are great and don’t ride up the back, making baby cold and uncomfortable
Footless or not they are so easy & can generally go with any vest to make a simple little outfit. I found these to be so practical and time-saving, without having to deal with press studs or buttons, just whip them off for a quick and fuss free nappy change.
Those tiny little footsies need all the warmth. My little Bubs was born in winter and I used to put socks on, with his baby grow to provide extra warmth for his feet. They are just the cutest little sized things and the soft cotton is perfect for their little feet to breathe and not get too sweaty (somehow those tiny little footsie tootsies don’t get smelly and even if they did, id still kiss and kiss and kiss them) There is something about little peoples feet – love!!!
I mostly used these at night when it’s a little cooler. Your baby’s head and feet are where they lose the most amount of heat. The Bubs for Babes beanies are the perfect fit for a newborn head and they come in a ray of colours and cute prints. They are cotton knit.
You will need umpteen, I mean umpteen (you’ll think you have enough) but be prepared for your new Mum life of having your little Bubs getting a wee bit sicky on you, as well as some nappy seeping decorations on those cute little baby grows. You’ll need enough backups in your nappy bag too. Extras are also needed if you don’t get round to do laundry every day. Buy baby clothes that are 100% cotton so that they’re breathable on your baby’s skin, so as not to cause skin irritations if they have sensitive skin. For those little ones who do have sensitive skin – I highly recommend preparing a cup of black rooibos tea (leave it to brew for a good while) then pour it into the bath with some extra temperature appropriate water. Have your baby soak in the rooibos bath water. When Bubs is finished bathing, having kept a little bit of rooibos aside, add a dash to some epimax baby cream & lather your baby. Any skin irritation will be gone – you’ll be amazed. I also swear by rooibos for treatment of nappy rash 😉
The most comfortable and snug item on the buy baby clothes guide. This product is great to keep your little newborn wrapped up and warm with no worries of blankets being kicked off during those chill day naps & night time sleeps. The starwrap is made from gorgeous, soft mink fleece that keeps your baby warm and cuddly. It’s the easiest thing to move your baby from sleeping in the cot to popping him into the car seat when going on an outing (it’s the perfect fit.) https://bubsforbabes.co.za/product/baby-star-wrap.
As I mentioned at the beginning, for my baby shower I received soooo many cutesy outfits: Baby chinos, gorgeous linen and denim shirts, dungarees… You name it, this little Bubs had the most styling wardrobe and more clothes put together between both Mum and Dad. I made any excuse to put them on him, even for a chilled Sunday morning beach walk and brekkie. It’s best to try and make as much use out of them as possible and you’ll find, you may only see your little bambino wear them once & in a flash… It’s been outgrown.
In the early days, you’ll very rarely find that there is a necessity for shoes and rather just socks are worn. Unless of course, you have some cute, little styling sneakers to match those gorgeous outing outfits. The best and most recommended shoes for later on when your Bubs is up and about and on the move – ShooShoos are the best recommendation because of the soft soles and super comfortable for taking those memorable first steps.
This is not just a buy baby clothes guide but rather what the all-round essentials are that are needed: You will find that you may not even have to buy one single blanket as this is one of the most common baby shower gifted items… The Bubs For Babes cotton knit reversible blankets are just perfect in your blanket selection. With options of pink, blue or neutral there are gorgeous prints to choose from: https://bubsforbabes.co.za/gallery/
Generally, your baby will sleep in onesies but the Bubs For Babes peejays are super cute and provide the necessary warmth (just pop your Bubs into a full body vest with the Bubs for Babes Peejays over.) The peejays have a gorgeous little sheep face appliqué and embroidered onto the front, which has a double layer of fabrics, so that there is no itching on the inside (from the embroidery). Great sheepskin type texture and also has little ear tags for sensory development for your baby and is excellent for self-soothing.
You’ll need to stock up on a good few of these as things get messy during feeding. You’ll be surprised how big and loud those burps are that come out of such little humans (and sometimes a little upchuck)
As your little ones grow & develop they begin to dribble a lot. You will find an increase in dribble during the time of their first to second leap. This is because the muscles in their mouths are developing and they aren’t able to gain control of their saliva glands so they continuously. Then there comes the teething dribble. Again, stock up on a good few of these (some days you may even go through as many as 3-4 dibs as they got soaked.)
(Truworths makes good bibs that have plastic sewn in between the cotton fabric which is excellent when it comes to protecting your little Bubs chest from getting wet.)
Having said the above… Don’t be caught off guard with only having newborn stuff and think “I’ll get the rest when the baby is born” too late she cried!!! Your little Bubs grows so quickly & before you know it he/she is 6 weeks and from then onwards…
Time, she flies by!!! When I did all the clothes prepping for my baby, I had ages 12-18 stored in the cupboard, but you will find the time & eventually get out to the shops (without the baby and it’ll feel like you’ve been on a vacation.)
Always remember to look out for washing instructions on all your baby items. It’s also important to wash all the newborn items before your little cherub is born. I had the time & I was nesting like crazy so I put all the love and care into hand washing all the newborn clothes.
I had so much fun doing this and chatted away to my little guy while hanging out all his little clothes. Not everyone has the time, the washing machine is just as good generally wash on a 40 degree, gentle wash (if your machine has a hand wash setting, do that.)
